No big surprises, but a few small ones. During February and March of this year we collected votes for your favorite restaurants. They were carefully tabulated by one of our editors to make sure that they voiced your opinions. Some were predictable, but a few came as a bit of a surprise.
Anybody hungry? We were quite surprised at the large number of different Vallarta restaurants that have won a special place in diners’ hearts, some of which were unfamiliar to us. Clearly, there is no shortage of options when trying to decide where to dine out in Puerto Vallarta.
What matters most? The “Overall Favorite” category received the largest number of responses, while “Best Steak”, “Best Margarita” and “Best American/Canadian” received the least. Beyond that, and based on the number of entries we received for the other categories, consistency, atmosphere and fun are the qualities you are most interested in for your dining experience.
Café de what? We chuckled quite a bit over the creative spellings we received for some of the restaurants, “Carlos O’ Brain’s” being a favorite. (We can’t help it–we’re editors.) And, just for the record, it’s “daiquiri”. Some of you even made up your own categories, i.e., Best Place to People Watch: The Sand Bar and Best Place to Meet People: Bobo’s. You can be sure you’ll see these categories in next year’s survey.
Say what? Finally, some of your remarks piqued our interest. For example, accompanying a vote for Ibiza, one of you remarked “the waiters are great, the owner is so friendly, and the hostess is hot!” and in reply to “Best Mexican”:you said “have not eaten Mexican in PV for eight years!”
Here are the results!
Overall Favorite: Café des Artistes
Predictably, considering the numerous other awards it has received over the years, Café des Artistes was not only the clear winner in the overall favorite category–where it received more than twice the number of votes as its closest contenders, Daiquiri Dick’s and Trio–but also won in three other categories.
Best Service: Café des Artistes
Once again, Café des Artistes took the prize, receiving nearly twice as many votes as Daiquiri Dick’s and Café Maximillian, the closest contenders.
Best Atmosphere: Café des Artistes
Best atmosphere was a close race. Café des Artistes won, but only two votes ahead of Le Bistro Jazz Café.
Most Romantic: Café des Artistes and Restaurant Bar Le Kliff
The race for most romantic ended in a tie, with Café des Artistes and Le Kliff each receiving 13% of the total votes. Their closest contender, Le Bistro Jazz Café, also had a strong showing with 8% of the votes.
Most Fun: Pipi’s
This category revealed another strong winner. Pipi’s took 22% of the total votes for this category, more than twice those of its closest contender, Restaurante Brasil.
Best Margaritas: Pipi’s
Although this category apparently didn’t elicit much interest, Pipi’s received both of the votes.
Best Mexican: Pipi’s
This race was a little closer for Pipi’s. Café de Olla, its closest contender, trailed by just two votes.
Most Consistent: Café de Olla
Café de Olla won most consistent, but had both Trio and The Red Cabbage hot on its heels.
Best Value: Café de Olla and Restaurante Brasil
This category received perhaps the most scattered results, ending in a tie between Café de Olla and Restaurante Brasil, with each receiving 6% of the total votes.
Best Oriental: Archie’s Wok
There was hardly any need to even count in this category. Archie’s Wok received all but three of the votes in this category (one of which was for Carlos O’Brian’s?).
Best Seafood: Mariscos Tino’s
Another category with a strong winner, Mariscos Tino’s received 21% of the votes, four times the number received by the closest contenders, Roberto’s Puerto Nuevo, Le Bistro Jazz Cafe and Adobe Café.
Best Italian: Porto Bello
Porto Bello was voted as best Italian (not counting pizza), receiving 31% of the votes in this category. Its closest contender was La Piazetta, which received 17% of the votes.
Best Pizza: La Dolce Vita
Dolce Vita won the best pizza category, receiving 30% of the votes, but was just one vote ahead of La Piazzeta.
Best Out of Town: Mark's Bar & Grill (Bucerías)
Marks Bar & Grill in Bucerias was voted best out-of-town restaurant, receiving 19% of the votes. Mariscos Tino’s in Pitillal also made a strong showing with 12%.
Best Steak: Rincón de Buenos Aires, Restaurant Chavas and Rancho Las Carmelitas
Another category that didn’t seem to elicit much interest, the mere three votes received were evenly distributed.
Best American/Canadian: Kit Kat
In the category that received the least responses, Kit Kat received the only vote.
