the competitive marketplace of international tourism, relying on the natural beauty
of a destination is not enough. Activities and attractions are essential for our
visitors, to keep them entertained. The past decade has seen enormous growth in
these areas, with new bay cruises offered, whether it’s by sailboat, catamaran,
yacht or the traditional panga. A number of land tours are offered of the town,
outlying villages and up into the Sierra Madre mountains. A regional air service
now offers day excursions to visit the Huichols, the coast of Careyes, or over
to Guadalajara. Golfing, which is a major tourist attraction, is definitely in
full swing with the recent completion of Punta Mita’s Jack Nicklaus course
and many more in development. One of the most promising attractions has been the proliferation of fine restaurants. People love to dine and Vallarta offers a myriad of possibilities. Underlying Puerto Vallarta’s popularity lies the fact that it is a safe place with a lower crime rate than other tourist destinations in this country. Here, authorities have been able to maintain an acceptable balance between ruthless repression and boundless permissiveness. Their duty, as they put it, is one of efficient prevention. Not only in Mexico, but in much of the world, there aren’t many places where one may come out of a disco or a restaurant at two in the morning and walk to the house or hotel, perfectly at ease, without ever looking back. And with a population of 250,000; to which three million visitors per year should be added, Puerto Vallarta is no small village. The police’s success is therefore commendable. | En
el competido mercado del turismo internacional no bastan las bellezas naturales:
es preciso disponer de actividades y otro tipo de atractivos. En la década
pasada estas áreas se desarrollaron significativamente y hoy existen en
Vallarta cruceros de la bahía en velero, catamarán, yate o en las
clásicas pangas. También hay turs dentro de la ciudad y a otras
comunidades vecinas o ubicadas en las montañas de la Sierra Madre. Los
servicios aéreos regionales brindan excursiones de un día para visitar
la zona huichola, la costa de Careyes o Guadalajara. El golf, uno de los atractivos
principales para el turismo, está en pleno auge con la reciente inauguración
del campo de golf diseñado por Jack Nicklaus en Punta Mita y algunos más
aún en construcción. La aparición de restaurantes excelentes
es muy prometedora pues a la gente le encanta salir a cenar y Vallarta hoy ofrece
múltiples posibilidades. Detrás de la popularidad de Puerto Vallarta está el que sea un lugar seguro con un índice de hechos delictivos muy por debajo de cualquier otro destino turístico en el país. Aquí, las autoridades han sabido mantener un equilibrio aceptable entre la represión sin criterio y la permisividad sin barreras llevando a cabo una función preventiva eficaz. En pocos lugares, no sólo de México sino del mundo, es posible salir de un restaurante o una disco a las dos de la mañana y caminar hasta la casa o el hotel con plena confianza de llegar en una pieza. Y no se trata de un pueblito pequeño: la población de Puerto Vallarta se calcula en 250 mil habitantes a los que hay que añadir tres millones de visitantes por año.
