Traffic on the three main throughways that cross the town from north to south has become heavier over the years, a natural result from the healthy growth within the central urban area. Most likely, as Puerto Vallarta continues to experience strong growth, the community will extend north into the flat lands of the valley of Banderas Bay. A similar transition took place in the late ‘80s when the town began to outgrow its limits. The development of Marina Vallarta, considered to be one of the finest marine developments in Latin America, offered new tracts of land for both hotel and residential development. It is the opinion of many that the future growth for Puerto Vallarta will be within the Nayarit section of Banderas Bay, out towards Punta Mita. However there is still plenty of development taking place south of Vallarta, within developments such as Conchas Chinas, Sierra del Mar, Garza Blanca and Mismaloya. And the virgin terrain south of Boca de Tomatlán offers a treasure of possibilities.

People create communities. And as those communities grow, they form smaller communities or neighborhoods with a style of their own. Puerto Vallarta is no exception. The downtonw area, with its oceanfront boardwalk, offers plenty for those looking for art galleries, gourmet restaurants, boutique shops and a lively nightlife. Zona Romántica, found in front of Playa Los Muertos, is best described as funky and fun, with lots of good restaurants, sidewalk cafes and streetside bars. In between is the river Cuale, which offers a colorful marketplace and plenty of more excellent restaurants. Wherever you go in Puerto Vallarta, there are always wonderful restaurants!

To the north, Marina Vallarta caters to those who prefer the marine lifestyle, or perhaps the more modern and contemporary services and architecture that a planned residential development can offer. It features a private school (the American School), an 18-hole golf course and a marina boardwalk lined with restaurants, boutiques and art galleries. Further north are communities such as Bucerías, Sayulita, La Cruz de Huanacaxtle and San Francisco, which have distinct personalities of their own. They will certainly play important roles in Puerto Vallarta’s future.

Many of Puerto Vallarta’s visitors are under the impression that the town is in a perpetual swing of celebration. And there are seasons when, indeed, this is a fact. During the month of November for example, the Fiesta del Mar includes four parallel events: the traditional billfish tournament; the Mexico Boat Show (a unique exhibit of the recreational marine industry that attracts boaters from all over Mexico); the Arts Festival organized by City Hall’s Department of Culture and the Gourmet Festival, where some of the best restaurants in the city participate inviting prestigious chefs from all the world to cook in their kitchens, and that has become a source of inspiration and improvement for the benefit of all.
Today, you will no longer find cattle grazing along the highway from the airport into town, or even on the runways of the airport as in days past. And there is no long drive out to the airport on a dusty dirt road.

Y ahora, gracias al nuevo pozo radial del río Ameca se duplicará la cantidad de agua potable permitiendo el crecimiento de la ciudad sin preocupación por el futuro.El tránsito por las tres vías que cruzan la ciudad de norte a sur aumenta año con año. Esta circulación nos da la medida del crecimeintode la zona urbana. Pero a la saturación del corazón de la ciudad se erigen como respuesta factible las tierras extensas del valle de Banderas. Ya en el pasado, a finales de los años ochenta, Vallarta pasó por una transición similar cuando la ciudad empezó a rebasar sus límites. Marina Vallarta, considerado uno de los mejores desarrollos marítimos en América Latina, ofreció terrenos residenciales y hoteleros para las nuevas construcciones. En opinión de muchos, Puerto Vallarta podría crecer hacia el norte, en el lado nayarita de Bahía de Banderas hacia Punta Mita. Sin embargo, el sur aún puede explotarse como lo demuestran los desarrollos de Conchas Chinas, Sierra del Mar, Garza Blanca y Mismaloya. Las tierras vírgenes al sur de Boca de Tomatlán ofrecen también un tesoro de posibilidades.

La gente crea comunidades. Conforme esas comunidades crecen, se forman otras constituyendo áreas o colonias con un estilo particular. Puerto Vallarta no es la excepción. El centro, con su Malecón, ofrece mucho a quienes buscan galerías de arte, restaurantes gourmet, boutiques y diversión nocturna. La Zona Romántica, ubicada frente a la playa de Los Muertos, podría describirse como un lugar poco convencional y muy divertido, con muchos restaurantes muy buenos, cafés al aire libre y bares con mesitas en la acera. Entre estas dos áreas se encuentra el río Cuale con su mercado y aún más restaurantes estupendos que parecen multiplicarse por toda la ciudad.

Al norte, Marina Vallarta es para quienes prefieren el estilo de vida marítimo o la arquitectura y los servicios más modernos y contemporáneos asociados a un desarrollo residencial proyectado como tal. Cuenta con su propia escuela (el Colegio Americano), un campo de golf de 18 hoyos y un malecón flanqueado por restaurantes, boutiques y galerías de arte. Más al norte se encuentran las comunidades de Bucerías, Sayulita, La Cruz de Huanacaxtle y San Francisco con sus personalidades distintivas estas poblaciones jugarán, sin duda, un importante papel en el futuro de Vallarta.

A muchos visitantes les parece que Puerto Vallarta siempre está de fiesta y existen temporadas cuando esto es absolutamente cierto. En noviembre, por ejemplo, se llevan a cabo las Fiestas del Mar con cuatro eventos paralelos: el tradicional torneo de pesca, el Mexico Boat Show (exposición única en el país, que atrae a los interesados en la náutica recreativa de toda la república), el Festival de las Artes organizado por el Departamento de Cultura del Ayuntamiento y el Festival Gourmet en el que participan los mejores restaurantes de la ciudad con chefs invitados de todo el mundo y que ha servido de acicate e inspiración para beneficio de todos.
