Live music takes on an entirely different flavor in Bucerias, La Cruz de Huanacaxtle
and Sayulita. These villages are much more laid back and the restaurants and bars
are noticeably more casual. You are no longer in the city; you are in a neighborhood.
And the music feels much more “friendly”. In fact, the area even seems
to attract a different kind of musician–more fun loving and less “professional”.
Bucerias offers a number of interesting music options, with Pancha’s and
El Lugar perhaps the leading late-night music centers. People go there for good
music and a good time. The more erudite go to Karen’s Place for David Ruiz’s
classical guitar at Sunday brunch and some nights, as well as the gypsy-tinged
Gitans’ Blonds on Thursdays. Most nights, Expressions offers dinner music
by guitarist/singer Tony Marquez. Other restaurants offer music on special days,
especially Sundays.
La Cruz de Huanacaxtle has developed a particularly interesting reputation as
the primary destination of foreign musicians, many of them from the cruiser community,
who like to sit in and make their own music, a lot like the folk cafe scene of
the 60s and 70s. Philo’s offers open-mic opportunities on Tuesdays and Thursdays,
while Ana Bananas does the same on Saturdays. Some of these musicians have become
so enamored with the area that they call it home during the winter or even year-round
in some cases. One group of them comes together during the season in the outrageous
band Bubba and the Bottom Feeders, who perform late Sunday afternoons at Ana Bananas.
People even drive out from Puerto Vallarta just to have fun with these guys. Fine
dining Papasito’s also offers dinner music two nights a week.
A far cry from laid-back La Cruz are the gated and guarded resorts on the road
to Punta Mita. According to musicians who have played there, Viva Vallarta has
the best facilities in the entire area and puts on highly staged music performances.
Some of the area’s best musicians play at the Four Seasons resort for the
elite drawn by its privacy.

Costa Norte
La música en vivo tiene un sabor completamente
distinto en Bucerías, la Cruz de Huanacaxtle y Sayulita. Estos pueblitos
son mucho más relajados y los restaurantes y bares notablemente mas informales.
Ya no estás en la ciudad, estás en un barrio. Y la música
se siente mucho más “amigable”. De hecho, la zona hasta parece
atraer otra especie de músico-menos “profesional” y más
amante de la diversión. Bucerias cuenta con un numero de opciones musicales
interesantes, con “El Lugar” y Panchas siendo quizá los centros
nocturnos musicales lideres. La gente va a pasar un buen rato y escuchar buena
música. Los más eruditos van al Karen´s Place a escuchar la
guitarra clásica de David Ruiz los domingos a la hora del almuerzo y algunas
noches, así como al Blond´s para escuchar el sonido gitano de Gitan´s
los jueves. La mayoría de las noches en Expresions se ofrece música
para cenar con el guitarrista/cantante Tony Marquez. Otros restaurantes tienen
música en días especiales como los domingos.
La cruz de Huanacaxtle ha desarrollado una reputación interesante como
destino principal de músicos extranjeros, muchos de ellos parte de la comunidad
“cruiser”, a quienes les encanta hacer su propia música, como
cuando los cafés folk durante los 60 y 70as. Philo´s ofrece oportunidades
de micrófono abierto los martes y jueves, mientras que Ana Bananas hace
lo mismo los sábados. Algunos de estos músicos se han enamorado
tanto del área que la hacen su hogar durante el invierno y en casos, todo
el año. Un grupo de estos se junta durante la temporada formando la disparatada
banda Bubba y los Bottom Feeders, que tocan por las tardes los domingos en Ana
Bananas. Hay gente que viene de Puerto Vallarta solo a divertirte con ellos. En
el elegante Papasitos también se ofrece música dos veces por semana.
Muy distinto al relajado ambiente de la Cruz son los hoteles con bardas y guardias
en el camino a Punta Mita. De acuerdo a los músicos que han tocado ahí,
el Viva Vallarta tiene las mejores instalaciones en toda el área y organizan
funciones musicales muy bien producidas. Algunos de los mejores músicos
del área tocan en el Four Seasons para la élite atraída por
su privacía.
