Tepic, the Capital city of Nayarit, located 167 km northeast of Puerto Vallarta, got its name from the indigenous name Tepique, which means, "place between hills". It lies in a fertile valley beneath three dormant.With a population of 200,000 and is the state of Nayarit's hub for commerce and government. Its history dates back to 1160 AD, when it was believed to be a stopping ground for Aztecs on their way to the Valley of Mexico. Several archeological sites have been found in the larger Tepic area. Besides its modern urbanism, Tepic is known for its grand architecture and for being the main trade center for the Huichol Indians. The Huichol bring their beautiful handicrafts from their remote mountain villages to sell in local stores. |
