San Sebastian was once a thriving silver and gold mining town of the 1800's with stately haciendas and a bustling population of 30,000.Set high in Sierra Cuale mountains, less than 1000 current residents earn their living by cultivating coffee as well as the traditional corn and cattle. San Sebastian lies in the shadow of the majestic peak of La Bufa (8,400 feet). A visit to the town offers a look into quiet Mexican country life. Several tours arrive daily in San Sebastian by bus (4 hours from Vallarta) or plane (15 min from airport) for lunch or a stay over at the rustically elegant Hacienda Jalisco. The town-square with its large plaza is the focal point of the pueblo with its nightly gatherings of locals. The impressive church stands guard over San Sebastian with a restored 17th-century edifice that was destroyed in the earthquake of 1868. Horseback, hiking, and biking activities are a great way to explore the countryside of San Sebastian with its old mines, quaint town, and rolling hillsides. Although quickly reached by airplane, driving to San Sabastion is a spectacular [and thrilling] way to enjoy this special "Real Mexico" destination. | |
