Guadalajara Guadalajara is the capital city of the state of Jalisco.

Its name comes from the Arabic wad al hadjarah, "River of Stones" given to it by one of Cortes' opportunistic comrades from Spain, Nuno de Guzman. After years of bloody battle his attempts to establish a western Mexican capital were finally met six years after his death in 1542.

Today Guadalajara is a city of three million strong and remains an important hub for Mexico's industry. Thousands of people flock there to shop for everything from handicrafts to cars. It is also a thriving cultural center with its many artists, writers and musicians.

Guadalajara encompasses over a hundred square miles and is home to literally hundreds of museums, cathedrals, galleries that are all built of spectacular architecture.
