Casa La Villita
by Guillermina Olmedo
winter-spring/2000

Vallarta Lifestyles Some people manage to create a lifestyle doing what others perhaps can only dream of, such as building beautiful homes in a tropical setting like Puerto Vallarta. John & Cathy Mylrea are two people who have done exactly that, recently finishing their fifth such project in Puerto Vallarta with their latest home: Casa la Villita.

The idea of a bed and breakfast, a corporate retreat or one of those small boutique hotels that are so popular now is the first thing that pops to mind when visiting the expansive but oh, so comfortable Casa La Villita. “If we were to keep it, that’s exactly what we would do,” says John. For although it works quite well as a spacious single family home, the potential of this property and the workmanship that has been done to bring it all about, is a tribute to the truly hard work of the Mylrea’s.

John, originally from Australia, enjoys buying older homes with plenty of potential for the sheer pleasure of rebuilding, restoring or remodeling them to bring out their best features. And so does Cathy, who was first introduced to Mexico in the fifties through her grandfather who purchased the Los Flamingos Hotel in Acapulco with John Wayne and Johnny Weismuller.

Built into the hillside of lower Conchase Chinas, one of the most prestigious residential developments on the south shore of Puerto Vallarta, Casa La Villita begins with a gated entrance road that winds down to the property. The villa is built around a dark blue Venetian-tile swimming pool that is replenished by a spectacular rock-faced waterfall. The courtyard features lush, tropical gardens, a barbecue grill, a grotto-type private lounge area and a large oval-shaped tiled table for outside dining and entertaining.

Casa la Villita features three levels, with a rooftop patio/palapa bar that offers expansive views of the Vallarta and Marina Vallarta shores. The beach of Conchas Chinas can be enjoyed from the terraces of any of the seven bedrooms (all with private bathrooms) that face out on to the bay.

On the upper level is the master bedroom and with a large sitting area and terrace. It also features a private jacuzzi and an in-position lap pool, created by waterjets that you swim against! The middle, or entry level, includes a spacious, modern kitchen, a large living room, a study, and a dining room that can seat up to 20 people. Most impressive, every room except for the kitchen looks out over bay and beach below.

The property encompasses almost 1,700 m2 and has two separate self-contained casitas, one of them located at the bottom of the hillside, next to the exit that leads to the beach only a few steps away. An upper casita is easily accessed by one of the two wide driveways that enter the property from the highway.

The architecture and interior design are definitely Vallarta style and include artistic touches that add to pleasure of the home. Cathy’s sense of color makes each of the rooms cheerful, bright and fresh. And craftsman tilework in creative color arrangements brings the bathrooms and kitchens to life. Casa La Villita has been furnished and renovated with classic Mexican flavor, without forgetting the conveniences of a modern home.

Casa La Villita is presently listed for sale at US $1,950,000. It is also available for rentals, accommodating up to 18 people.
