Lifestyles Profile - ManáManá is not just a household name anymore. The most famous Mexican rock band had already won a Grammy in 1999 for their album Sueños Líquidos when they recorded 'Corazón espinado' for the knock-out Carlos Santana album Supernatural. Fher Olvera, Alex González, Juan Calleros and Sergio Vallín love Puerto Vallarta (they are installing 150 garbage cans on our beaches) where vocalist and composer Fher has a home. It was also in a Conchas Chinas villa that they recorded their Grammy-winner album. Last December, Alex, the drummer, opened de Santos, his own restaurant, where one of these nights you may get lucky enough to meet the whole band. We did and grabbed the opportunity to interview them. Vallarta Lifestyles: After all the brouhaha of success, do you envision any changes in your music? Maná: Success and recognition happened without our noticing. We are immersed in a continuous creative process that takes us from one album to the next. Our goal is, naturally, to get better all the time. VL: We know you are concerned about the health of the environment, are you also interested in the contamination of the spirit? Maná: In our song we have incorporated issues that we consider important: human rights, ecology and drug abuse, and we'll always sing about love and rejection as they are part of our life as much as laughter and tears.
VL: Why do people here say that you have 'adopted' Vallarta?Maná: Puerto Vallarta has been very important for Maná. It is a place where we've been able to explore and whose atmosphere permeated some of the music and lyrics in two of our albums. VL: Alex, can you tell us more about the concept of your restaurant? Alex: With my partner Luis Miguel Amutio we developed a contemporary concept with a minimalist decor where people are seen. We also wanted to offer reasonable prices because we believe that locals should be treated as tourists. The menu is short and simple and the food, great. Another important element is music, so every night after dinner we have our home DJ mixing house music from Europe and the US. Late at night, we like to see people get up and dance. | |
