Profile - Laura López LabraFrom an early age Laura López Labra showed a keen desire to become a fashion designer. Her elder sister had studied design and dressmaking and she tells of how her family used to scold her for grabbing her sisters sewing material and how she was once found sitting under the table armed with a pair of scissors about to declare war on a piece of precious material tucked in her lap. She learned how to sew and cut material from her sister; however, her desire to create is entirely her own doing, which began with an intuitive rejection of dress patterns. For Laura, fashion is something volatile and conditioned. Laura makes a single garment of her exclusive designs, something very unusual in this age of consumer fashion, trends and vogues. She does not relate to size-making either, for she believes each dress to be unique and made to fit a figure. Similarly, each fabric has its own appeal. For Laura, there is something about subtle and draping cotton gauze, one of the most difficult fabrics to shape, which she tailors skillfully. Her preference for white cotton gauze has led her to specialize in beach models, though wedding dresses are her favorite designs. They bring back memories of an adolescent yearning to marry Prince Charming all dressed in white, which she did, and devoted her life to her family, until one day, she woke up to be herself again and started sewing and cutting away. In Vallarta, she found an ideal beach setting for her original dresses, which also enjoyed a televised runway with the models she designed for the actresses of the Mexican soap opera Marea Brava. Now in her middle age, she enjoys making small adjustments to her designs and, though white is the color of her dreams, she is slowly contemplating the rainbow. At her boutique, Lauras Designs, a provocative red and yellow are beginning to show up on the racks, where you may also find lace, crochet and chiffon among the white cotton gauze, and now she says with no regrets she would never marry in white again. |
