Toody Walton Lifestyles Profile - Toody Walton
fall-winter/2000

Dresses and skirts, pants and tops for a sleek contemporary look or a very romantic feminine style, La Bohemia has been catering to women of different sizes and tastes for years. Cool and comfortable, this line of clothing is so perfectly adapted to our climate one can't help but think the designer knows Vallarta well. And not only that, she definitely understands women's needs—all women: tall and stout, short and curvaceous or Greek goddesses. "We are all different and beautiful in our difference," says Toody Walton, creator of La Bohemia, who, like many other successful entrepreneurs, trusted her own answers to solve a "simple" problem.

Creative (with a small "c", she says), strong and adventurous, Toody came to Vallarta for the first time in 1968, returning from Phoenix, Arizona, every time she was able to save US$300 ("that's how cheap it was to come and stay here for a whole week!"). Finally, in 1978, PV became home for Toody, who confesses to having enjoyed a magnificently fun life in PV's golden days, in a cafØ society where everybody knew everyone else and nights were full of excitement, backgammon tournaments, inter-esting conversations and laughter. "The variety of people was amazing. I remember sharing meals with Leonard Bernstein, Richard Burton and John Huston. Where else could this have happened to me?" Only in Vallarta. You hear it everywhere: at that time the poor and the wealthy, the famous and infamous would mingle partaking in the fun.

In those days work for Toody entailed a little modeling, some English lessons and eventually developing and editing the popular daily Vallarta Today. But part of living full time in Vallarta meant adapting to its hot, humid summers. And to answer the eternal question of "What shall I wear?", Toody began designing her own clothes, looking for the fabrics (something she loves to do) and developing the patterns. The next step was sharing her discoveries with other women through her own shop. Since the mid nineties, in Colecci-n La Bohemia a faithful clientele finds not only unique outfits but also the shoes, hats, handbags and jewelry to go with them. Producing five or six new designs every year, this October she added a narrower silhouette to offer her customers the most fashionable option. For this and other reasons women in Vallarta have found an understanding friend and fashion designer in Toody.
