Judith Ewing-MorlanLifestyles Profile - Judith Ewing-Morlan
fall-winter/2000

A well known artist and much loved Vallarta personage, Judith Ewing-Morlan started painting at the age of 25: "At the time I was feeling overwhelmed by life and found solace in painting; it kept me sane." Since then, painting has also been a source of endless exhilaration and, very importantly, a universe where solving problems is of paramount importance. And Judith likes the challenge.

"Struggling is fun; if I did not have to struggle with my painting, I would not paint!" Although admitting that in the dark atmosphere of most contemporary art it may sound old fashioned, she defines painting as color and says that the reason behind her coming to Mexico was to warm up her palette¸ and what blazing colors she found! "Landscapes here are awesome;" and the way she gives them back to us, refreshing. "Once I was painting in an ejido, and from my viewpoint I was looking at an incredibly beautiful series of rolling hills planted with papaya trees."

Every day she had a small crowd of locals from the nearby community would gather around her asking in total bewilderment why that particular view was so inspiring to her. When the painting was ready, Judith presented it to the community who†she could tell by their ecstatic looks—rediscovered the beauty of their surroundings.

There is a building on the corner of Guerrero and Miramar in Gringo Gulch that, thanks to Judith, Vallartans will be able to see in another light. For years it was occupied by all sorts of disreputable bars; but Judith has rescued this great space to turn it into an art gallery where her ambitious plans include showcasing the best young artists of Mexico.

The grand opening is scheduled for November 11 with a solo show of Judith's work: a wonderful opportunity to admire her canvases filled with flowers and landscapes where mountains abound. "Mountains are the most important element in my paintings, so different among themselves, so fresh and unique. They are like random drawings of God!"
