Evelyne
Boren
by Josef Kandoll
Winter-Spring 2003

Equally
at home in Mexico, the USA and Europe, the multi-cultural Evelyne Boren considers
Sayulita her home. Moving there from Puerto Vallarta gave her a new start in giving
art classes, now held on the beautiful beach outside her studio. Many of
my students repeat the class. We also donate time and materials in the plaza for
the children of the town.
In short time, Evelyne has become one of the top-selling artists locally and elsewhere.
People like my work because its happy. They want to enrich their lives.
I think its even more true in difficult times because my sales have continued
very well. As winter starts to cool the north, she and her husband, Michael
Sadlier, head for their lovely home in Sayulita.
When
warm turns hot, they head north to Santa Fe, New Mexico, where they own another
home. In the summer, when temperatures shoot up in the high desert, they leave
for Europe. My daughter lives there. I spend time with her and my grandson.
Then I usually travel and do classes on the Continent for part of the summer.
A couple years ago, after one of her classes in Provence, Borens rental
car was stolen. In the back, all packed up, were her entire summers worth
of painting. Some time later, the police found the car in a farmers field.
Half of the paintings were gone. Its something you can never get back,
even though I have repainted some of them.
On the other hand, that same summer, I had one of the most wonderful experiences
in my class. A 70-year-old woman, legally blind, took my class. She listened very
closely, and she could see a little, maybe light and shade. Her paintings were
abstractions but she was expressing her feelings.
Watch for her next exhibition at Galería des Artistes in Puerto Vallarta.
