GW. Megrail, known casually as Bill, is an open, intelligent, unpretentious man who is modest about his art and achievements. An American by birth, he has been dividing his time between Puerto Vallarta and San Miguel de Allende for the past twenty-five years. During his time in Mexico he has made his living solely from his art sales, which are consistent and quite successful. At the moment, Bill spends half the week in El Tuito, a small, extremely quiet, picturesque town 50 minutes south, and the rest of the time here. “As a painter,” he says, “I can become very isolated while I’m working, but I’m addicted to people so I need to come into Vallarta to see friends and socialize. I love the tinselly glitz of this town.”

There was a time when Megrail did feel the need to isolate himself from other artists. There were too many movements, theories or schools, each with its own rigid orthodoxies and expectations. He found that in Mexico he could freely develop his own style, particularly in Vallarta, which he feels is a haven for artists who are completely individual and free-spirited. Megrail’s art always depicts some aspect of the natural world—a beach, a jungle or a stunning view from the side of the road. Even though his work is strict, vibrant realism, his formal training in abstract expressionism comes through. His paintings demonstrate technical excellence in the mixing of the oils, composition and design.

“There’s no theory behind my art,” says Megrail. “It is simply what you see. What I want to do with my work is make people stop and see what’s there, to make them know where they are. For me, painting is studying what I see.” All of his canvases begin on location, as it were. His work is the result of the direct experience and interpretation of nature, and he calls it a subtle protest on behalf of ecological conservation. “But most importantly,” he hastens to add, “what I try to do is communicate the magic of just being alive.”
Megrail has distinguished himself in Vallarta by chairing the Department of Plastic Arts of the Allende Institute, a branch of the University of Guanajuato; by opening and running his own gallery, Galeria Parochia, for three years; and by contributing approximately five paintings per year to various charity auctions.

GW Megrail, conocido informalmente como Bill, es un hombre inteligente, abierto y sin pretensiones, modesto acerca de su arte y sus logros. Norteamericano de nacimiento, ha estado dividiendo su tiempo entre Puerto Vallarta y San Miguel de Allende durante los últimos 25 años. Durante su permanencia en México ha vivido únicamente de las ventas de sus cuadros, que son consistentes y bastante exitosas. Por el momento, Bill pasa la mitad de su tiempo en El Tuito, un pueblito pequeño, pintoresco y muy calmado a cincuenta minutos hacia el sur, y el resto aquí. “Como pintor”, dice, “puedo estar muy aislado mientras trabajo, pero soy adicto a la gente, así que necesito venir a Vallarta a ver a mis amigos y a socializar. Me encanta el brillo de este pueblo.”

Hubo una época en la que Megrail sentía la necesidad de aislarse de otros artistas. Había demasiados movimientos, teorías y escuelas, cada una con su propias e inflexible expectativas y ortodoxias. Se dio cuenta de que en México podía desarrollar libremente su propio estilo, particularmente en Vallarta, que el siente como un refugio para artistas completamente individuales y de espíritu libre. El arte de Megrail siempre plasma algún aspecto de el mundo natural- una playa, una selva, o una vista imponente desde la orilla de la carretera. Aunque su trabajo es estricto, realismo vibrante, su entrenamiento formal en expresionismo abstracto sale a relucir. Sus pinturas muestran excelencia técnica al mezclar los oleos, en diseño y composición.

“No hay teoría detrás de mi arte,” dice Megrail. “Es simplemente lo que ves. Lo que hago con mi trabajo es hacer que la gente se detenga y vea lo que hay ahí, hacerles saber donde están. Para mí, pintar es estudiar lo que veo.” Todos sus cuadros empiezan en alguna locación (por llamarlo de algún modo.) Su trabajo es el resultado de la experiencia directa y la interpretación de la naturaleza, llamándolo una sutil protesta en nombre de la conservación ecológica. “Pero más importante aun”, se apresura a decir: “lo que trato de comunicar es la magia de estar vivo.”

Megrail se ha distinguido en Vallarta dirigiendo el Departamento de Artes Plásticas del Instituto Allende, una división de La Universidad de Guanajuato; por abrir y dirigir su propia galería, la Galería Parochia durante tres años; así como por sus contribuciones de aproximadamente cinco de sus cuadros anualmente a varias subastas caritativas.
