Twelve Distinguished Artists of Vallarta

In preparation for our annual art issue, we conducted a survey among the owners of Vallarta’s many art galleries to determine which artists should be featured this year. In the survey, we asked that they choose 10 from a list of 35 artists who have left their mark on our town, and also provided space for write-in votes–of which there were surprisingly many. (It’s amazing that a town of about 300,000 residents can count so many accomplished artists among them!) We also noted that the renowned Manuel Lepe should not be included in the list because he would be featured in our “Vallarta Art” piece about Vallarta’s very own school of art. We further asked that they base their decisions on the following factors: talent, sales, portraying Vallarta’s true spirit and giving back to the community. From their responses, we then determined the top six, Ramiz Barquet, Ada Colorina, Rogelio Diaz, Marta Gilbert, Bill Megrail and Ireri Topete, and the six runnersup, Judith Ewing-Morlan, Francisco San Miguel, Jesus Tellosa, Cathy Von Rohr, Angelina Kyba and Geoff Watkinson. We hope you enjoy reading about these outstanding personalities as much as we enjoyed preparing the material.

En la preparación de nuestra edición dedicada al arte, realizamos una encuesta entre los propietarios de varias galerías vallertenses para determinar qué artistas figurarían en esta edición. En nuestro cuestionario, solicitamos que se escogieran a 10 de una lista de 35 artistas que han dejado su huella en nuestra ciudad, y también ofrecimos la modalidad de votos por correo, de los cuales recibimos gran cantidad. Así mismo, resulta sorprendente que una población de 300.000 habitantes cuente con una comunidad de artistas destacados tan importante. Decidimos no incluir al reconocido pintor Manuel Lepe porque figuraría de forma principal en el artículo titulado Arte vallartense, junto con otros artistas de la misma tradición. Solicitamos que hicieran su valoración conforme a los siguientes criterios: talento, ventas, reflejo del espíritu vallartense y contribución a la comunidad. De las respuestas recibidas seleccionamos a los seis primeros, Ramiz Barquet, Ada Colorina, Rogelio Díaz, Martha Gilbert, Bill Megrail y Ireri Topete y a los seis siguientes, Judith Ewing-Morlan, Francisco San Miguel, Jesús Tellosa, Cathy Von Rohr, Angelina Kyba y Geoff Watkinson.
