Lifestyles Profile - Alexis Burwell By Heather Wilson Alex Burwell, the enthusiastic president of the Nayarit real estate board (AMPI), discovered the North Shore of Banderas Bay in the late ‘90s and immediately fell in love with the area. “I’m convinced it is one of the best places in the world to live. “It offers a privileged lifestyle, yet will stay as virgin as it is now because meticulous planning and hard work has gone into ensuring that it does. The municipality of the Bay of Banderas, which stretches from Nuevo Vallarta to Lo de Marcos, is one of the few in Mexico that has a definitive Municipal Plan of Development. And knowing what the future holds is worth a lot to buyers.” After growing up in colonial Merida in the Yucatan, he finished his high school education in the USA and later earned a degree in international relations with a major in foreign investments, prior to traveling in Southeast Asia for a year. “And that was a mind-opening experience. Crewing in Australia, where 90% of the population lives on the coast, introduced me to the lifestyle this coast is aiming at. Its golf courses attract the Japanese, who buy second homes there. From the ocean, at night I’d watch their lights twinkling as far as the eye could see and think, Wow! It will not be long until our entire coastline is privately owned.” For a couple of years Alexis was on the top-performing sales team at Puerto Vallarta’s Coldwell Banker, along with Brit Catherine Martin and Frenchman Marc Sinanian. Business took them to Punta Mita, where they formed La Punta Realty. Since starting off modestly in a corner of a palapa restaurant on the beach, their young, dynamic team has never looked back. Alexis is living his dream, yet takes his responsibility to buyers seriously and encourages others to do the same. “As consultants, we’re in the front line doing all that’s necessary to make the bureaucratic machinery less complicated. So, we need to stay on top of things. That’s why all professional brokers should be AMPI members. Real estate is much more than matchmaking.”
