In their collection
are works by Marta Gilbert, Alejandro Colunga, Sergio Bustamante, Francisco Sanmiguel,
Edith Palombi, Tellosa, Gustovo Bravo and Feliciano Bejar. “I love the pieces
I have, so I’m not thinking of resale; though I do get them reappraised from
time to time for my kids. I know that the Colunga has doubled in value, and the
Bustamentes have all increased in value.” Their collection numbers over 450
pieces, which range between $800 and $2,500 USD apiece.
“We buy art anywhere – in Mexico, Paris, Palm Beach, New York, Italy,
Turkey, Hong Kong and Bangkok. In Greece, I bought boots,” she laughs. “We
only buy art when we see something we like. Sometimes when I’m traveling,
I don’t buy anything, not even clothes, because the place doesn’t have
much, just great history. Sometimes I see marvelous stuff in museums, but I can’t
buy it. I have to go to galleries.”
When comparing art purchases in Mexico to other parts of the world, Hinda speaks
frankly, “You pay what they’re charging because that’s its worth.
The artists need their money. They work very hard and suffer lots before they’re
recognized. You can’t just give them credit; they need the money.”
Any advice for the emerging collector? “Find an artist you’ve been following
and a gallery owner you trust. If buying a print, buy a low number. Love what
you buy. Don’t buy for color alone, because it matches your furniture. Sometimes
art is fascinating or horrifying, or the science of how it’s created makes
it wonderful. Don’t just buy because it’s beautiful.”
Politically minded Canadians may wonder what their members of parliament do in
retirement. Well, you’ll find one of them nestled in Nuevo Vallarta. Jennifer
Cossitt has been coming to Puerto Vallarta since 1988 and began collecting art
soon after she first built there in the 1980s.
“When I came to Puerto Vallarta, I started collecting more art than in the
past. My lifestyle allowed me to indulge in my interest in art. The first Zamarripa
I purchased had a strong pull for me. On the back of the sculpture he had carved
crabs, and that’s my astrological sign – so I bought it.”
Since then she’s bought lots of art, some in the USA and some in Mexico.
“Mexican prices are very competitive. I wouldn’t exactly call them a
good deal, but they are a good value for what you’re paying. In Puerto Vallarta
you can pay anywhere from $1,000 to $25,000 USD for art. It’s not just size
and name that affects the price, Zamarripa’s materials can be very expensive.”
Like many other collectors, Jennifer falls for certain pieces. “If I like
it and I have a place to put it, then I’ll buy it. Sometimes it catches my
attention because it’s whimsical. I have a great interest in abstract art.
Among her collection are Oscar Zamarripa, Marta Gilbert, Tellosa and Dominguez.
I just go into galleries and look around. If I like a piece and have the money,
then I purchase. It really boils down to what I like. I don’t consider what
other people might think of it.”
Shipping hasn’t really been an issue for Jennifer, as she’s an intrepid
driver between Canada and Mexico. “I’ve taken things to Canada and couldn’t
use them there, so I purchased a condo and brought them all back again –
myself.”
A little advice for people just getting into art? “Go for things you really
enjoy,” says Jennifer. “Get into original pieces if you’re going
to be a serious collector.” And that’s exactly what she’s done,
creating her own environment. “I feel good when I’m surrounded by good
quality art,” she muses.

en revender; aunque les hago un avalúo de tiempo en tiempo para mis hijos.
Se que el Colunga ha duplicado su valor, y todos los Bustamantes han incrementado
en valor.” Su colección cuenta de más de 450 piezas, que varían
entre $800 y $2500 dólares por pieza.
“Compramos arte en cualquier lado- en México, París, Palm Beach,
Nueva York, Italia, Turquía, Hong Kong y Bangkok. En Grecia, compré
botas,” se ríe. “Solo compramos arte cuando vemos algo que nos
gusta. A veces al viajar, no compro nada, ni siquiera ropa, porque en el lugar
no hay mucho, excepto historia. A veces veo cosas maravillosas en museos, pero
no las puedo comprar. Tengo que ir a las galerías.”
Al comparar compras de arte en México a otras partes del mundo, Hinda habla
francamente, “Pagas lo que cobran porque es lo que vale. Los artistas necesitan
su dinero. Trabajan arduamente y sufren antes de ser reconocidos. No solo hay
que darles el crédito, necesitan el dinero.”
¿Algún consejo para el coleccionista que comienza? “Encuentre
un artista con el que haya estado familiarizándose y un propietario de
galería en quién confíe. Al comprar una impresión,
compre una con número bajo. Ame lo que compre. No compre solo por el color,
porque hace juego con sus muebles. A veces el arte es fascinante u horripilante,
o es la ciencia de cómo fue creado lo que lo hace maravilloso. No lo compre
solo por ser bonito.”
Quizá hay Canadienses interesados en la política que se preguntan
que es lo que hacen sus miembros del parlamento al jubilarse. Bueno, encontrará
a uno de ellos anidando en Nuevo Vallarta. Jennifer Cossit lleva viniendo a Puerto
Vallarta desde 1988 y empezó a coleccionar arte muy pronto después
de construir ahí en los 80´s.
“Cuando llegue a Puerto Vallarta, Comencé a coleccionar más
arte que en el pasado. Mi estilo de vida me permitía la indulgencia de
mi interés por el arte. El primer Zamarripa que compré, tenía
una fuerte atracción para mí. En la parte trasera de la escultura
él había tallado cangrejos, y ese es mi signo del zodiaco-así
que lo compré.”
Desde entonces ha comprado gran cantidad de arte, parte en EU y algo en México.
“Los precios en México son muy competitivos. No les llamaría
exactamente una ganga, pero tienen buen valor respecto a lo que está usted
pagando. En Puerto Vallarta puede usted pagar de $1000 a $25000 dólares
por una pieza de arte. No es solo el tamaño y la firma lo que afecta al
precio, los materiales de Zamarripa pueden llegar a ser muy caros.”
Como muchos otros coleccionistas, Jennifer se enamora de ciertas piezas. “Si
me gusta y tengo lugar donde ponerlo, lo compro. A veces atrapa mi atención
por caprichoso. Tengo gran interés en el arte abstracto. Entre su colección
encontramos a Oscar Zamarripa, Marta Gilbert, Tellosa y Domínguez. Solo
entro a las galerías y miro alrededor. Si una pieza me gusta y cuento con
el dinero, la compro. Lo que importa realmente es que me guste. No tomo en consideración
lo que la demás gente pueda pensar al respecto de la pieza.”
Los embarques tampoco han sido problema para Jennifer, quien es una intrépida
conductora entre Canadá y México. “Me he llevado cosas a Canadá
y no podía utilizarlas allá, así que compré un condominio
y me las traje de regreso- yo misma.”
¿Algún consejo para la gente que empieza a interesarse en el arte?
“Adquiera cosas que realmente disfrute,” dice Jennifer. “Adquiera
piezas originales si quiere ser un coleccionista serio.” Y es exactamente
eso lo que ella ha hecho, creando su propio entorno. “Me siento bien rodeada
de arte de buena calidad,” reflexiona.
