 Horseback RidingHorses have always been a part of life in Puerto Vallarta. Charros, or cowboys, have been riding the hillsides and valleys in this area for centuries. Visitors also can take to the hills, rivers, villages and jungle by horseback, exploring the countryside with bilingual tour guides, learning the history of the area and experiencing Vallarta in a more natural way. There are several tour providers and ranches to choose from, each with different types of packages. Examples include riding from a ranch along a riverbank up into the mountains to stop at a panoramic view of the Bay of Banderas, then lunch at a little mountain side eatery; riding deep into the jungle discovering tropical flowers and exotic wildlife on the way to an authentic homemade Mexican lunch prepared as has been done for generations over an open wood fire. All-day tours begin with breakfast, then riding into the mountains along a riverbank, stopping for a swim, then on to a barbeque. Adventure rides take you along rugged trails teeming with wildlife into a small town for lunch. There are also overnight tours and even horseback vacations. Maybe flying by private airplane to a picturesque former mining town high in the Sierras, then riding on horseback to a 100-year-old hacienda for breakfast, and on up the mountainside sounds exciting. Custom trips can also be arranged. Reservations can be made for every level of expertise. Guides are bilingual and knowledgeable in flora, fauna and wildlife as well as first aid. Or maybe a simple trot around town, down cobblestone streets and onto the beach is more your style; those are available as well. Yippie-kie-yay! |
