Through the ages, they have successfully escaped the influences of the modern world by secluding themselves in the inaccessible reaches of the Sierra Madre Mountains. The Sierra Madre is so rugged that the Spaniards left it alone during their conquest of Mexico, and noted revolutionary leader Pancho Villa chose to hide there during the Mexican Revolution. For centuries, this challenging geography has been the homeland of the Huichol, who today number about 16,000. Believed to be direct descendents of the Aztecs, the Huichol are a determined and very private civilization, whose everyday lives are inexplicably intertwined with what they perceive to be the mysticism of the natural world. Small, closely integrated settlements are scattered among the mountains, connected only by rocky paths carved into cliffs, often thousands of feet high. These communities come together in one of five ceremonial sites that serve as the main political, religious and administrative centers for the Huichol.
