Cutting through the Sierra Madre Mountains is no easy task, and driving through the new highway that connects Puerto Vallarta with Talpa is a true testament to the enormous engineering challenges that had to be overcome. A trip through narrow and treacherous dirt roads that used to take up to eight hours by car and was virtually impossible during the rainy season is now easily navigated in three and a half. Crowning this accomplishment is the spectacular El Progreso bridge over the San Sebastián river canyon. Exploring Talpa, along with nearby San Sebastian and Mascota, has never been easier. And continuing on to Guadalajara from Talpa is possible, a more scenic, albeit a bit slower, route than the direct highway.
