At six o’ clock sharp, the smell of delicious roasting meat becomes noticeable and people are anxiously waiting in line for Tacos on the Street to open. This singular La Cruz de Huanacaxtle restaurant has been operated for the past 12 years by the husband and wife team of Jorge Armando Díaz and Raquel Gómez.
Their roasted meat tacos with corn or flour tortillas have quickly won the hearts of both locals and tourists. The same goes for their dessert, a delicious flan prepared according to a family recipe. Since the owners never named their taco stand, their American clientele has appropriately named it Tacos on the Street.
Although taco stands traditionally are places where one eats on the sidewalk, here one has the option of enjoying a treat while seated indoors. Tacos, eaten with bare hands and seasoned with hot sauces, are probably the most popular item of Mexican fare worldwide.
Tacos on the Street is located at Huachinango 9, just two blocks from La Cruz’s main square, and is open Saturdays and Sundays from 6 to 12 pm. The adventure of finding them and then trying one of their tacos will be well rewarded.
