Jacinto Lopez Ramirez, a Huichol artist and shaman, passed away in 2007, leaving behind a legacy of traditional Huichol art forms. In the late 1960s, he was one of the most significant influences on the commercialization of bead art, currently practiced by many Huichol artists, including his wife, Angelita, and most of his seven children. His only son, Florencio, who has been described as one of the best bead artists of our time, is taking this intricate art form to the next level by using microbeads to create finer detailing than ever before. Peyote People owner Kevin Simpson, who befriended Jacinto many years ago, fondly recalls: “Jacinto didn’t care if people knew his name, but he cared that they knew he was Huichol.”
