May 15, 2004 - Speaking of heat, last month we here at Viva Productions took some.

After a couple of false starts, summer weather is upon us. So until next November 7 or so yes, you can almost pinpoint when the weather changes each year with that kind of specificity I won’t leave home without an icy bottle of water and a facecloth for brow mopping. During these sultry summer days, being ‘”stuck in the office,” which is nicely air-conditioned, is definitely not so bad.

Speaking of heat, last month we here at Viva Productions took some. One of our better-known print publications is “Vallarta Lifestyles,” with the emphasis on the Lifestyles. So when Lifestyles Mexico, which specializes in bringing together “uninhibited, open-minded and fun-loving couples for a night of liberal, erotic and sensual ambiance where your fantasies can become reality” did just that here in Vallarta on April 17, we got a rash of chastising calls for supposedly sponsoring the event. By the way, not one person I know knows of anyone who admits to attending…

One place I went and want to tell everyone about is San Sebastian, a pretty, former silver-mining town in the mountains just a 12-minute flight away. The fact that it tends to be about 13 degrees Fahrenheit cooler there than here is a bonus, since the mountain hideaway is an absolutely charming getaway regardless. Everything about the Vallarta Adventures day tour my editor and I took to the 4,210-feet-above-sea-level pueblo was top notch. And thanks to the guide, I now know that for every thousand feet above sea level one goes, the temperature drops by three degrees Fahrenheit. We’re fortunate in Vallarta to have several intriguing destinations in the surrounding mountains, including Mascota and Talpa, that Vallarta Adventures also flies to.

When it comes to being cool, Barbara Coffey, who was the managing editor of Condé Nast’s “Glamour” magazine for 25 years, personifies it. A native of New York state who has been coming here for 17 years now “because Puerto Vallarta just gets under your skin,” she winters in her condo up in Conchas Chinas. Vivacious, with a fabulous flare for fashion, this is a woman who understands good taste not only for the 18 to 35 demographic, but for those of us “of a certain age.” Author of “Beauty Begins at 40” and “How to Look 10 Years Younger and 10 Pounds Thinner,” Coffey says the worst fashion faux pas older women make is to cling to the clothing, makeup and hair styles that looked good on them when they were in their prime and now makes them look like caricatures of their former selves.

“And the way some tourists walk around with their bellies hanging out is no treat to look at either, and it makes me sad, because with the wonderful resort wear and inexpensive accessories one can find here there is no reason not to look and feel great.”
