July 19, 2002 – Just when you thought it was safe to go in the water…
I’m happy to report that scuba enthusiasts in Vallarta have no worries because two of our local companies providing scuba diving services – Vallarta Adventure and Chico’s Dive Shop – do what it takes to ensure your diving experience is safe. Out of 128 companies providing these services nationwide, only they and three others passed recent inspections conducted by the Mexican Society of Standards and Certification. Caveat Emptor!
Speaking of water, our summer rainy season, a damp and entertaining few months which ends in October, makes me wonder what happens to car washers’ beer budgets as the heavens take over their jobs. And I get a kick out of watching kids transform flip flops into sailboats on streets gushing with H2O. Occasionally it’s a nuisance – soaked feet and running makeup – but it’s always fun and a cohesive factor in the community. If you spend any time at all here at this time of year you know what it’s like to gingerly pick your way across the tallest cobblestones and make it to the sidewalk just to get drenched by a passing vehicle. But what can you do? We’re all in the same boat and laughter about the season’s wet common denominator comes easily.
Wonderfully refreshing and invigorating, the collective sigh of relief the town breaths at this time of year is almost palpable. Once again our gorgeous flora emanates robust good health. This year the greening of the mountains has been so swift it’s almost visible to the naked eye. As you read, the tree canopy is stretching and growing, creating ever-changing vistas for Vallarta’s latest eco-adventure. Now a bird’s eye view of nature’s bosom is possible by soaring above it on one of Vallarta’s two new tree canopy experiences, one south and the other north of town. And you needn’t be a jock. I’ve enjoyed both and I’m the most unathletic person you could imagine. You’re protected and supported every step of the way – seven-year-olds do this repeatedly. It’s truly amazing to eyeball orchids, parrots and other brightly colored creatures calling the tree canopy home. Even the scenery en route is heart elevating.
Making my son-in-law’s heart race is the thought of getting up close and personal with 48 golf greats at the upcoming EMC World Cup Golf Championships to be held here December 10th to 15th. I’m enthusiastic too, since it may be just the ticket to finally get my daughter and her two children here for a visit. $160 US pays for all the events at the Jack Nicklaus-designed Vista Vallarta course, with a 10% discount if paid by American Express. To order from the US and Canada call 1-866-809-3127, from Mexico 01-800-EMC-2002, and from Puerto Vallarta 221-0401 and 209-0832. With some 12,000 spectators and press anticipated, I’m keeping my fingers crossed that Julie and her husband will be among them!
One of my favorite things in sultry weather is a good cup of cold coffee. Prefer yours steaming? Try caramel frappuccino or iced latte and you just may become a contented convert. Over the last few years, Vallarta has witnessed huge growth in venues serving serious coffee. The Olas Altas area in the South Side, for example, has at least five welcoming spots dedicated to brews of the bean grown in this country. El Centro and the Hotel Zone have a high concentration as well, making for cosy spots to get in out of the rain.
