El Dia de San Valentin (Valentine's Day), is also known as El Dia de Amor y Amistad - the day of love and friendship. It is celebrated on February 14th in Mexico, just as it is in the USA, Canada, United Kingdom, France and Australia. The celebrations in Mexico are very similar to other countries, in that many people go out for dinner and give cards, chocolates, flowers and other special gifts are given to the ones they love. However with the emphasis on friendship as well as love, it is not uncommon in Mexico, for friends who do not have a significant other in their life, to go out together on February 14, to celebrate their "love" and friendship for each other.
There are many beliefs on the origin of this special day, but people in the Middle ages believed that February 14th was the day that birds began to mate and thus the celebration of love began. In early times, Valentine's were spoken, sung or handwritten greetings, but over the centuries handmade cards of various types were created and by the late 1800's, machine printed cards were sold.
The following restaurants are offering special Valentine's Day menus: de Santos, La Palapa, La Petite, Le Kliff, Mark's Bar and Grill, Porto Bello, Talento, Tikul, and Vista Grill.
