PV's Most Visible Symbol Celebrates 85th Birthday
The eye-catching church behind City Hall and the Main Square, Our Lady of Guadalupe, turned 85 years old October 12. Its distinctive crown of angels, modeled on that worn by Mexico's Empress Carlotta in the 18th century, is newer however, added in the mid-'70s.
Planned festivities were to include a solemn mass, followed by cake for all in attendance, who would then cross the street to the outdoor Los Arcos Amphitheatre, where the Ballet Vallarta Azteca dance troupe performs, followed by fireworks in the night sky. When you next find yourself looking at promotional material about this resort destination, chances are you are going to notice this church, its distinctive profile evoking Puerto Vallarta near and far.
