Pitillal Children's Library Benefit

The ideal opportunity to do some early Christmas shopping while helping former literary agent Sally Conley continue stimulating young minds, a couple of hundred people attended the November 28 fund raiser for Biblioteca de la Higuera (named for the huge sheltering fig tree in the courtyard). Four years ago, Conley opened this cheery indoor-outdoor space to share her love of books with local children and encourage their creativity. Assisted by volunteers, twice a week they are read to one-on-one, paint, draw, and have computer access as well as healthy snacks. And now the children's own creations, like papier maché roosters and brightly colored cardboard cats, will stuff many a stocking Christmas morning, artists Judith Ewing Morlan and Cassandra Shaw also donating their work.
