New Group Forming to Help Prevent Extinction of Mexican Macaw
On March 31st at 3:00 pm, the PV Botanical Gardens will host an information and discussion forum on long term survival strategy for the Mexican Military Macaw. Once common in the mountain ranges along the Pacific Coast of Mexico around Puerto Vallarta, populations of this magnificent parrot are now at dangerously low levels and the survival of species is now in jeopardy. The main threat to the Military Macaw is illegal collection of newly hatched chicks for the pet trade. Over 90% of collected chicks fail to survive. Everyone should be aware that ownership of macaws requires a permit. Anyone being offered baby chicks for sale should resist the impulse to buy. Persons wishing to become involve are asked to attend this important meeting. Topics will include the establishment of a permanent rehabilitation center, conservation strategies and education of the rural population to halt the collection of the baby macaws each spring time.
