Vallarta's May Festival Will Feature Renowned Mexican Singer
Internationally-renowned Mexican singer Astrid Hadad will feature her latest show in Puerto Vallarta on May 30 as part of the city's 39th anniversary celebration. Colorful satire, humorous social commentary and raw criticism are the personal brand of Hadad, who first gained notoriety as Donna Giovanni on an all-women take on Mozart's famous opera. The surrealist production, reminiscent of Kurt Weil and Bertolt Brecht's operatic collaborations, toured throughout Europe receiving critical acclaim. This talented performer is equally at ease taking traditional bolero and ranchero Mexican songs to a new level through her theatrical productions, where the use of a tequila bottle on stage has earned her the nickname of La Tequilera, taken from the title of such traditional songs.
In a recent interview, the Mexican diva refered to her style as 'de cabaret' (from cabaret). "I know that the cabaret origen is from Germany and it is so sad, also the word is really devaluated, but I do it in a Mexican way, a song to life. We can’t perform a depressing show because our county is full of colour” assured Astrid. About the iconic Donna Giovanni, she muses, “I auditioned casting for a character, but didn't know (director) Jesusa and it was a great experience. I didn’t even know about the tour to Europe, and after that big success with the theater company, I came back alone to present my own show all over that country.”
Hadad's musical Heavy Nopal Show, where she used iconic references not only as scenery, but also on her own body, was another big success for her. She has been described as “walking museum of popular cultures.” “When i started to sing seriously with my guitar I realized that I was looking for more, so I researched about cabaret in Germany and Mexico and made my own style. I wanted to do a visual show because I always loved the paintings, a passion that i have, and also to represent the richness of our history through my songs,” said the diva about her consistently ingenious custom design.
Her productions include shows like Nostalgia Arrabalera (Suburban Idealized), Del Rancho a la Ciudad (From Ranch to the City), Luz, Levantate y Lucha, based on the life of Mexican singer Lucha Reyes, Pecadora (Sinner), Sol y Sombra (Shadow and Sun), among others. Hadad has also starred TV soap-operas and movies like Solo con tu Pareja. About her upcoming performance at Puerto Vallarta she commented: “I have great productions like La Muerte Chiquitita (The little death), a very visual show with traditional mexican songs. Besides, the great custom design quality and humor are things people enjoy very much. Astrid Hadad's performance will take place at Puerto Vallarta's Malecon on May 30, at 8:30 pm.
