Let's Go Shopping

A new program to offer rebates on purchases with the federal tax (IVA) was authorized by the federal government for foreign tourism this week. Debate springs up as to the effectiveness of this program, with supporters stating that with air fares rising nearly 35%, the rebate of the IVA on airline tickets will return a portion of the initial cost. Detractors say that it won’t affect the majority of tourism since the minimum charge allowing a return is $1,200 pesos. The average amount spent by cruise passengers is $650 pesos, a little over $60 USD, while other visitors spend about $760 pesos, just over $70 USD. Details haven’t been worked out yet as to how the program will be implemented on the local level. 9/20/05
