Heartfelt Celebration of Mexico's Independence September 15-16

There's a hum of pride in the air in the days leading up to this national holiday, festivities in Puerto Vallarta for the 196th anniversary of Mexico's independence from Spain centered around the town's Main Square on the popular downtown Malecon. As is the tradition throughout Mexico, at 11 pm on the 15th the mayor will lead revelers in the traditional grito, or cry for independence, repeating words fervently spoken back in 1810 by Mexican priest Miguel Hidalgo.

Instrumental in achieving independence from Spain, Hidalgo called to arms all Mexicans seeking social and economic justice. But upon learning that their plot to overthrow the Spanish colonial government had been discovered, the padre quickly ratcheted up his efforts, summoning his fellow conspirators with ringing church bells, then making an impassioned plea that they take immediate action. This is where the famous phrase "Viva Mexico" originated.

And even today, some two centuries later, it's interesting to see the emotion expressed by many of those repeating those words — including Americans and Canadians who love this country! The War of Independence lasted 11 years, until 1821. Vallarta's celebration will include, at 7 pm, a "Gran Noche Mexicana" show at the Los Arcos outdoor amphitheater, featuring folkloric dance troupes, mariachis and singers. In addition will be races with prizes, including one with donkeys, parades, the ceremonial lighting of the torch of independence, fireworks, and a big dance in the square, which is expected to overflow onto the Malecon. Should the idea of enjoying a special dinner beforehand appeal, several of our finest restaurants, including La Petit and Kaiser Maximillian, will be offering Independence Day menus.
