Locally-Produced Tequila Receives Official Certification

Tequila Doña Engracia has recently obtained its Normal Oficial Mexicana (NOM) and Denomination of Origin given by the official Mexican government regulations to all officially certified tequila brands. Produced locally at Hacienda Doña Engracia in La Desembocada, a beautiful little town near to Puerto Vallarta, its history began seventeen years after the Mexican Revolution. In 1927 the Cristero rebels took up arms to fight against the government and the anti-clerical articles contained within the Mexican Constitution of 1917.

While Mexico's religion-supporting Cristeros were making political history, Señor Jesus Ramirez, better know as Mayor Grimaldo, was making history of his own by supplying the rebels with his hand-crafted tequila during the two-year uprising. Although the rebellion ended in 1929 when U.S. Ambassador Dwight Morrow helped to facilitate a diplomatic resolution to the Cristero war, Señor Jesus continued making his prized tequila.

His recipes were passed down three generations from his wife Engracia to her daughter and granddaughter. Nearly 50 years later the granddaughter of Engracia who was named after her Grandmother, married Carlos Gerard, whose grandfather came to Mexico from France with Napoleon's Army to support Emperor Maximilian. As fate would have it his Grandfather’s family was in the wine business in France. It was a marriage made in heaven: her family’s tequila recipe combined with his familie's wine making talents kept the legacy of this fine tequila alive. Decades later, the liqueur preserves the original recipe developed by Ramirez and bears the name of Doña Engracia to honor the women of the family who kept the traditional recipes alive.
