This year's gala fundraising event March 4 to help economically needy local students continue their educations was a great success. Generous contributions came in from several sources, including ticket sales, the annual auction, and checks presented by both the International Friendship Club and the popular Los Bambinos musical group, which donates a percentage of CD sales to this important cause. But when the 14th annual Becas Ball wrapped at the Westin Regina the support for this cause didn't. One example is when a bunch of Conchas Chinas couples got together to discuss how to celebrate the eighty-fifth birthday of their friend, Lola Torres, and the question of what to give her for her birthday came up. Elinor Prawer had the ideal solution. Each couple would donate $85 USD – one dollar for each year of her life – to Becas Vallarta. They knew that giving a youngster the gift of education in her name is a gift Lola will truly appreciate — and so will these young people!
