Airport Improvements Ease Congestion

The $149 million peso ($13 million-plus USD) renovation and expansion of Puerto Vallarta's Gustavo Diaz Ordaz international airport is still underway, but traffic flow has already improved. And since the number of folks visiting here has risen sharply this year, it was just in time. To give you an idea of the numbers we're talking about, in 2005, some 2 million, 758 thousand passengers used this terminal compared to 2 million, 279 thousand the year before. Improvements to this facility operated by El Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacifico, which manages a dozen airport terminals in Mexico, include a new building, three new baggage claim carousels, a greatly expanded charter flight ticketing area, more shops and restaurants, 12 new parking spaces right at the exit that are designated for tour operators, and, in general, the whole place is spiffier and will be 53% bigger before this project ends. And future plans call for a satellite terminal to be built.
