Did you know that there are about 240 indigenous species of orchids growing wild in the greater Puerto Vallarta area? TJ Hartung, founder of the Vallarta Orchid Society, does.
This society was inaugurated in 2006 with the goal of educating people about orchids, as well as rescuing and preserving the existing orchid species in our area. Meetings are held at the Puerto Vallarta Botanical Gardens at 1:00 pm on the last Saturday of the month from October through May, except December.
Hartung, an authority on orchids, occasionally leads hikes into the hills around Vallarta to enable other enthusiasts to learn more about orchids and observe them growing in their four natural habitats: terrestrial ( in soil), epiphytic (on trees), lithophytic (on rocks) and saprophytic (in decaying plant or animal matter). To meet this interesting man and learn more about orchids, consider attending a future meeting or check out the Vallarta Orchid Society website, www.pvorchids.com.
