Best Example of Neighborhood Empowerment: Pat may and Her Sewing Group

Hidden away in the traditional Mexican town of Jarretaderas, just minutes north of Puerto Vallarta, is an unsung hero named Patricia May. For the past six years, she has been bringing bolts of donated fabrics, sewing machines and notions from the USA to give to local women. Every Saturday afternoon, they meet at May’s house for a sewing class, where they learn new skills.

Hidden away in the traditional Mexican town of Jarretaderas, just minutes north of Puerto Vallarta, is an unsung hero named Patricia May. For the past six years, she has been bringing bolts of donated fabrics, sewing machines and notions from the USA to give to local women. Every Saturday afternoon, they meet at May’s house for a sewing class, where they learn new skills and have also developed a strong support system, all because of their “American angel.”

Another of May’s voluntary initiatives is a program to help the female inmates of the local prison earn spending money while developing job skills, integrity and pride. May pays these ladies to hem tea towels, which are sold at Encore Boutique, Oooh La La Boutique and the Puerto Vallarta Botanical Gardens. All proceeds are reinvested to purchase more fabric, and this amazing cycle continues.

People often say, “I’m just one person, and there’s nothing I can do!” but Pat May proves that one person can change the lives of many. If you can contribute in any way, email casafresca@aol.com.
