Recent upgrades at Puerto Vallarta’s international airport, named for former Mexican President Gustavo Díaz Ordaz (1964-1970), have greatly improved the quality of service offered to national and international travelers arriving to our paradise.
However, for Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico (GAP), which manages the airport, modernization doesn’t stop there. A new satellite building is being constructed to increase the number of passengers the airport can receive. This important project is scheduled to be ready by February 2008.
José Gómez Díaz, who has headed the current administration for the past two years, stressed that “There is no resemblance to the old airport. Even the parking lot has changed to receive the increasing number of people that bring their friends or relatives to the airport.”
It was not until 1968, when Puerto Vallarta became a city, that the necessary funds to build its airport were received. Yet, since 1942 Vallarta had received flights from Guadalajara, which landed on a dirt strip. Gone are those days of austerity.
