 Twenty guardian angels are now looking after the well-being of residents and tourists alike who turn Puerto Vallarta’s most popular beaches into their daily playground. Established in 2006, thanks to a partnership between federal and municipal governments, the program includes an increasing number of lifeguards from the local firefighter squad undergoing intense training in both swimming pools and open sea, provided by the Maritime Rescue Association (Asociación de Rescate Acuático, A.C.).
To be a part of this group, each lifeguard has to excel in swimming trials, volunteer for community services, as well as participate in specialized courses on rescue and vigilance techniques. Supervisor Esteban Calderon works closely with his team year-round, constantly seeking to improve their qualifications and enhance their commitment to Puerto Vallarta’s tourists.
