Make A Wish in Puerto Vallarta

The new JEM art gallery will exhibit works of several artists and collect funds for the Make a Wish Foundation on Tuesday, October 24.

This famous organization raises funds to provide terminally ill children with some activity that they want very much. The recently opened gallery is on the corner of Guerrero and Miramar.

 Pedestrian Mall Downtown?

Sharing the opinion of hundreds of foreign residents, some storeowners in the downtown area are urging that the center of town be reserved for pedestrians. Motivated primarily by economics, not aesthetics, the business people feel that limiting tourism to foot traffic would increase their income. They object to the fact that thousands of tourists are shunted off to a select few shops by those who transport them from the many cruise ships that visit our port.

Many foreign residents, on the other hand, object to excessive vehicular traffic downtown-especially bus traffic-because of the congestion and air and noise pollution they feel it causes.

Meanwhile, locals who have to be able to get to work downtown say that bus service through the district is indispensable. The issue is complex but many are hopeful that the new mayor, whomever he turns out to be after the November 12 election, will take measures to make downtown cleaner and quieter.

 Computer Advice from Expert

Local computer expert and newspaper columnist, Jaime Coates, owner of the Net House Cyber Cafe, gave us some pertinent advice for this rainy season in a recent article. 'Do not,' says Jaime, 'keep your computer directly under a leaky roof!' This is indisputably excellent advice and we reprint it here 1. because some newer computer users may not have thought of it and 2. it is, after all, the 'silly season' for news. Actually Sr. Coates has an archive of computer advice columns available at www.vallartacafes.com, if you would like to read some of his more weighty information.

Puerto Vallarta's 4 Festival of the Arts

As the first main cultural event of the high season 2000-2001, the 4th. Festival of the Arts, organized by City Hall Dept. of Culture, will take place from Nov. 2nd. through the 26th. A total of 34 events will be offered free to the local population and visitors on varied stages such as hotels, schools and open spaces like Los Arcos amphitheatre on the Boardwalk.

Take notice on the joyful Art Walk Cocktails and shows in Downtown galleries, the Greek Festival with Music, Dances and Gastronomy from the Helenic country; Contemporary Dance, New Orleans Jazz with Cut Time Band, Sacred Music at the Main Church and Classical with the Connecticut Chamber Orchestra directed by Sayard Stone.

With a minimum budget, director Marça JosÌ Zorrilla and volunteer staff has designed a cultural side to this destination as just not a beach'n sun resort, providing Puerto Vallarta with a new face to general amazement. We hope the new administration to be elected this month will give this plausible initiative the deserved following.
