Sergio
Bustamante's New Sculpture's Contoversy. The newly erected sculpture by famed ceramist Sergio Bustamante is not being received well by the public. The new piece is a ladder rising in the air with two figures near the top and another near the bottom. The locals are calling the hooded figures "Scare-A-Pelican." The sculpture has become popular with young children to climb, but parents have been objecting not only to its appearance but also to the danger it poses these young climbers. This drew a group of concerned citizens to march in on a recent City Council meeting to protest the sculpture, call it an eyesore that should be removed from the Malecon, it is located at the junction of the boardwalk and Corona street. The protestors said it contaminated the visual beauty of the bay and suggested in the future an artistic commission be set in place to evaluate public art work to be erected. |
