 U.S. Navy arrives in PV

On Thursday January 26, The United States guided missile destroyer "Milius" arrived at Puerto Vallarta's Naval Yard. The Captain and other ship officers were honored at a cocktail party Thursday evening at Viejo Vallarta Restaurant. The officers along with the crew of the Milius have several community projects planned while they are in town, including the painting of the Cruz Roja (Red Cross) building.

The Navy League of Puerto Vallarta, who is responsible for the US Navy visits has developed several programs where the officers of such ships bring goods and services to the Puerto Vallarta area. Call 222-2034 for more information.

 New Art Museum opens in Vallarta's south side

The Ernest Munoz Art Museum opened on January 15, 2000 to much fanfare and public celebration. Several city officials were on hand to open the museum that is home to Munoz' large format surrealistic and symbolic art. The building itself is a masterpiece with it's massive indoor columns, crystal chandeliers and ornate finishing. The new museum, located at 272 Francisco Madero, will also hold concerts and other cultural events. 222-1970 for schedule of events.

 Real Estate Market Hotter A Mexican Summer

The real estate market in Puerto Vallarta continues to be very strong. This high season, the industry is seeing multiple offers on existing properties and new construction, spawning bidding auctions between prospective buyers. As was forecasted by several realtors when interviewed last summer, many buyers have taken earnings gained from the stock market and invested them in properties here in Puerto Vallarta.

 New Restaurant, Mana, Santana and the Jalisco Connection

"De Santos", Vallarta's newest and coolest restaurant, is co-owned by Alex Gonzales, the drummer of the very hot Latin American Rock band, Mana. Gonzales is a fan of Vallarta and can be seen in town every couple of weeks to consult with fellow owners, Luis Miquel Amutio, and Master Chief, Juan Carlos Amutio on the fine Mediterranean cuisine that the new eatery is fast becoming known for. He and his band mates can also be found checking out the local music scene while in town.

De Santos is located at 661 Morelos, Tel. 223-3875. Hours are 5:30 pm to 3 am, the kitchen closes at 1 am. Music is provided by DJ's "Birtual & Eberado." Mana performed on Santana's latest album, "Supernatural" which has been nominated for eleven Grammies.  Discovery Channel Investigating Bay of Banderas

The Discovery Channel is in the process of researching the Bay of Banderas region for the filming of their popular television series. The Discovery Channel was attracted to this area because of the diverse variety of vegetation and wildlife that is abundant here. The concepts for the three shows now in consideration are; turtles, beetles and wasps.

The Bay of Banderas has been the focus of many scientific, ecological and governmental protection programs and has drawn international interest from several well known environmental activist such as the late Jacques Cousteau and most recently actor Ted Danson's American Oceans Campaign. www.discovey.com

 Puerto Vallarta Mourns Alaska Airlines Flight 261

The tragic crash of Alaska Airlines flight 261 from Puerto Vallarta to San Francisco and Seattle has left a pall over our city. Everyone has been saddened at the news of an airliner which was taking friends and family home had crashed into the sea north of Los Angeles. Several of the passengers had second homes in Puerto Vallarta and will be missed as members of our community.

On behalf of all the citizens both part time and year round we here at VirtualVallarta.com would like to extend out heartfelt thoughts and prayers to friends and family who have been touched by this tragedy.

 

Vallarta Mourns Candle Light Memorial held for Alaska Fight 261

Several hundred people convened on the Malecon Sunday February 6, 2000 to remember the victims of Alaska Airlines Flight 261 that departed Monday from Puerto Vallarta and crashed into the sea north of Los Angeles.

David Cuevas, Mayor of Vallarta gave a touching tribute which was translated by Lynne Bairstow, of the Office of Conventions and Visitors of Puerto Vallarta. The Hotel Association of Puerto Vallarta handed out candles to all who attended.

The crowd was asked to light their candles at 8pm, the street lights were darkened and a minute of silence was observed in honor of those who lost their life while traveling from out city. A poem was also recited, while 88 flowers one for each passenger, were thrown into the sea.

A special tribute was given to Gabriela Chavez, a resident of Puerto who perished on the flight. A beautiful wreath was walked into the waves by the Mayor of Vallarta, General Manager of Alaska Airlines in Puerto Vallarta, Antonio Alvarado, in honor of all who died as a show of unity from the people of Puerto Vallarta. After the beachside ceremony a special Mass was held in the town of Pitillal.

 New edition of "Discover Puerto Vallarta" released

Marilu Suarez has released the second edition to her popular book, "Discover Puerto Vallarta." The book is a guidebook to the surrounding area with beautiful photos by Mark Callanan, John Welzenbach and Danilo Rottigni. Suarez is also editor/writer of "The Magic Of Puerto Vallarta" now in its third edition.

 Vallarta MLS to Go Online in February

Multi-List Vallarta will go online this month in conjunction with www.virtualvallarta.com In this database directory, Realtors and prospective property buyers and sellers will be able to research the Puerto Vallarta real estate market. Producciones Viva has been producing the MLS directory for the local realtors for the last ten years.

 Café des Artistes Leopoldo Cortez Wins The Golden Touch Award

With his Turbot Duo with mussels juice and lemon tea, chef Leopoldo Cortez of PV's Café des Artistes won this year's Toque de Oro (Golden Touch) Award presented to the best chef in the country. This prestigious gastronomic contest takes place in Mexico City's exclusive Industrialists Club (Club de Industriales).

The runner-up was chef Enrique Gutiérrez from León, Guanajuato. Enrique has been the guest chef twice at another PV restaurant, Coco Tropical, during our yearly Gourmet Festival in November.

 A Master Printer's Workshop

If you are interested in etching, keep your eyes and ears open for the workshop that master engraver Nunik Sauret will impart during the month of March in the river Cuale island cultural center. For more information on how to enroll, contact the Culture Department at City Hall.

 

 Two New Specialty Shops Open in Puerto Vallarta This Week

Local NewsCerroblanco Jewelry opened its doors for business Friday night with a public reception to introduce the designs of Pepe Cerroblanco. Cerroblanco is a third generation jewelry designer from San Miguel de Allende, and former matador or bull fighter.

Cerroblanco Jewelry was founded in 1942 and is known for its high quality designs and craftsmanship. Each item is hand-constructed of sterling silver, 14k or 18k gold and semi precious and precious stones and is signed by the designer. Cerroblanco Jewelry has been available at Saks' Fifth Avenue, Nordstrom's, Bloomingdale's, Seibu & Sakos and has been featured in several women's and industry magazines. Chiquita Banana Art and Gift Gallery at 275 Guadalupe Sánchez, also began its first day of business last Friday with a cocktail reception given by owner Kaki Boulet. Boulet's shop features the work of several Oaxaca painters including, Enrique Flores, Román Andrade Llaguno, Jorge Sánchez and Modesto Pérez. Chiquita Banana also has unique jewelry, handmade dolls and other gift items.

 Banderas Bay Regatta Dates Announced

The eighth annual Banderas Bay Regatta will take place March 23 to 26. The Regatta will be headquartered at Paradise Village Resort in Nuevo Vallarta and will feature four days of races open to all cruisers and racers. Several family-oriented events as well as nightly cocktail parties, entertainment and a awards banquet are also planned.

 Los Veneros Beach Club Opens Shopping Plaza

Los Veneros Ecological and Recreational Park has now added a shopping plaza to its many amenities. Now open are new shops where original art work, traditional Huichol weaving and beadwork, manta-style clothing, resort wear, fashion designer clothing, Oaxacan rugs, as well as other shopping opportunities can be found. There are also traditional rugs hand-loomed by Zapotec women on the premises.

 Westin Regina Resort Receives Quality Service Award

Local NewsThe service evaluation for quality control in resorts and hotels known as ISO 9002 was awarded again to the Westin Regina Resort in Marina Vallarta. This is the fourth time the resort has received the prestigious award for quality service. Every six months evaluations are conducted to maintain the certification.

Manager of Human Resources, Jesús Reyes, stated, "It is difficult to obtain the certification, but it is ever more difficult to maintain - it is constant hard work by the entire staff." Westin Regina Puerto Vallarta first received the award in November of 1998.

 

 International Film Festival Announced

The Municipal Department of Culture, the University of Guadalajara Preparatory School and the Puerto Vallarta Public Library Sponsor Award Winning International Films Seven award winning films, including those honored at the Cannes Film Festival in France, the San Sebastian Awards in Spain and the National Film Festival in Mexico will be shown at the Bahía Theater from February 25 to March 2.

Opening the festival will be the Colombian film, Vendedora de Rosas or Rose Seller directed by Victor Gabriela. Films from France, Norway, England as well other countries will be featured.  Dinner Theater Comes to Puerto Vallarta

Theater Vallarta is now doing dinner theater at Sr. Chico's. The third production by the theater company will be "Who Needs A Waltz" by Fred Carmichael. The play is directed by Eileen O'Leary and is described as a romantic comedy with a twist, set in Jamaica. Opening night is March 9. With dinner served at 6:30pm.  Timeshare Industry Faces new Regulations

A 29-article proposal has been brought before City Hall and is expected to gain approval by April or May of this year. The proposal is based on federal consumer protection laws that regulate timeshare operations in Mexico, however without the cooperation of municipal government the norms are not enforced, which has been the situation in Puerto Vallarta.

The Rules for the Promotion of Timeshare in the Municipality of Puerto Vallarta contain eight chapters of proposed legislation. If passed, the new restrictions would include licensing and registration with the municipality, promotion restrictions on approaching people in public. It would also enforce mandatory sales training and fines of up to 3,500 Pesos for violations.

The proposal is a collaboration between the local municipal commission, Profeco, Mexico's consumer protection agency, and members of the local timeshare operators association, Adeprotur.

 San Diego To Puerto Vallarta Yacht Race Underway

For 47 years the San Diego Yacht Club (SDYC) has run off shore sailing regattas to Mexico, making this race one of the longest running sailing events ever to come to Mexico. The starts for the thousand-mile regatta from the SDYC to Punta de Mita began at noon Tuesday February 15th through Saturday, February 19th. It is being sailed under Racing Classes A, B, C, and a cruising division.

This year a top group of international sailors will be competing, including Olympic Gold Medallist, Robbie Haines. Also participating from the recent America's Cup in New Zealand, Peter Isler and Matt Smith from "Stars and Stripes" as well as sailors off "AmericaOne" who will be sailing the large Class A boats.

George Folgner, Chairman PV 2000, is quoted as saying, "The best racing will be in the B Class of 50 footers. Four SC52's and others will be racing almost boat for boat for 1,000 miles." The award ceremonies and trophy dinner will be held at Paradise Village Resort and Spa in Nuevo Vallarta on February 26th.  Paradise Village not a "Village" any Longer

On February 22, the of the governor of Nayarit, C.C.P. Antonio Echevarria Dominques and President of Grupo Paradise Village, Graziano Sovernigo, inaugurated the construction works of Paradise Village Ocean Vista Residences, a residential complex with 56 grand luxury full-time suites. The construction is expected to be finished by the end of the year.

The 18-hole professional golf course designed by Robert Von Hogge will be ready in 24 months and will include a residential area of 598 de luxury suites and 577 villas.

On the same day, the formal opening of the mall took place. With 110 establishments PP is the first mall in Nuevo Vallarta. In two levels, air conditioned, spacious, marble floors, top of the line finishings, panoramic elevator, indoor parking for 350 cars. It already offers banking services in Banamex, Sunset supermarket, deli, Italian ice-cream shop, shoe shops, handcrafts, clothing, cigars, and soon it will feature a medical and dental clinic, restaurants.
