Puerto Vallarta Among Top 20 International Destinations
Carlson Wagonlit Travel Associates recently released the results of their annual "Late Summer/Fall Travel Trends Survey" for 2004, revealing that Puerto Vallarta is among the top 20 international destinations for US travelers. The survey of 313 Carlson Wagonlit Travel Associate owners, managers and frontline agents, conducted July 8 to August 12, 2004, indicates that Las Vegas and Caribbean cruises are the most popular domestic and international vacation destinations for fall 2004, respectively. The results also reveal promising news about the continued upswing of the travel business overall: 92% of the respondents said their bookings to date are equal to or higher than at this time last year.
Dance Your Cruise Away to Puerto Vallarta
While watching cruise ships arrive in Puerto Vallarta every week may seem like business as usual for those of us who live here, sailing on a trip for the sake of it may not be enough for today's traveler. A wealth of thematic cruises has been steadily increasing over the past few years, offering travelers a broad variety of choices, from learning opportunities (e.g., computer, digital photography or cooking seminars) to lifestyle cruises. You'd like to sail on an all-smokers cruise? You can do that. Cruises for non-smokers? You can do that as well! DanceFun, for example, which has been offering dance cruises since 1989 and organizes seven to 10 a year, books a block of cabins, up to 150 passengers, on major cruise lines. Its eight-day Jan. 8 salsa cruise aboard Norwegian Cruise Lines' Star out of Los Angeles stops at Acapulco, Puerto Vallarta, Cabo San Lucas and Zihuatanejo/Ixtapa. For information, contact 866-326-2338 or dancefun.com.
New Direct Flight from San Francisco to Puerto Vallarta Announced
Catching a flight to Puerto Vallarta, one of Mexico's hottest destinations, has never been a problem for Bay Area travelers. Finding a non-stop flight, though, hasn't been so simple. But fliers can look forward to a wider flight selection starting in December. That's when Ted, United's low-price airline, will begin non-stop flights to Puerto Vallarta and other Mexican Pacific destinations, in some cases with competitive prices.
Gastronomic Fundraiser Announced
Several top-notch Puerto Vallarta restaurants have joined their talents for the first time for a social cause. Bianco, Cafe des Artistes, Kaiser Maximilian, Los Xitomates and Trio Restaurant Bar Cafe will collaborate in a culinary "palomazo," or jam session, in which a six-course dinner will be offered along with wine, a cash bar and live entertainment. The event, to take place Friday, October 8, at CasaMagna Marriott Puerto Vallarta Resort, will benefit AGAPE, Arturo y los Hijos de Dios and Becas Vallarta. Cost per person will be $600 pesos.
Greenpeace Icebreaker Visits Vallarta
The Arctic Sunrise, an icebreaker ship used by the internationally known environmental organization Greenpeace, will pay Puerto Vallarta a visit this week. Its mission, to visit Mexico's Pacific coast, expose global environmental problems and offer solutions for a green and peaceful future. Ironically, before Greenpeace chartered the Arctic Sunrise it was once a sealing vessel. Its hull is rounded with no keel, so that the ship lifts out of the ice instead of being crushed by it. The Arctic Sunrise will dock at the Maritime Terminal and will be open for visitors Sept. 15 - 18, 10 am 1 pm and 3 7 pm, and Sept. 19 10 am 1 pm and 2 6 pm.
Puerto Vallarta Celebrates Independence Day
It was at dawn on September 16, 1810 when Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, a 57-year-old priest from a family of criollos (Mexican-born Spaniards) had begun to persuade his parishioners in the small town of Dolores, Guanajuato to rise up in arms — stones, sticks or spears - in order to defend their religion against the "French heretics" who had occupied Spain since 1808 and now threatened to come over to the Americas. As this important date approaches, Mexico prepares to celebrate its independence as a nation and Vallarta is no exception. Look for special events in our events calendar. Additionally, many restaurants are offering special Mexican dinner packages.
49th International Sailfish and Marlin Tournament Announced
Preparations are underway for the 49th International Sailfish and Marlin Tournament, organized by the Puerto Vallarta Fishing Club. In existence since 1956, the organization's objective has been to promote fishing as a sport. As in years past, many prizes will be awarded in different categories, all topping more than $150,000 USD worth. Learn more about the tournament by visiting www.fishvallarta.com.
Maritime Terminal Scheduled For Expansion, Finally
It has been announced for almost a year now, and Puerto Vallarta's Maritime Terminal will finally get its makeover. The construction of two new docks will allow three cruise ships to use the facilities concurrently. With a $180 million peso investment, the newly overhauled terminal will extend its usefulness for 20 years. In related news, Olas Altas business owners recently met with port authorities to express their concern about the safety of the much-smaller dock at Los Muertos Beach, which has been closed to cruise and fishing boats for three weeks. No official statements have been made pertaining the extent of the damage, nor when it will be repaired.
