Mexican Independence Day Festivities Announced
Mexico's Independence Day, one of this country's most important holiday celebrations, is just around the corner. As in years past, Vallarta's Department of Culture has organized a variety of events surrounding the official date, September 16. Please check our events calendar for some highlights!
Downtown Parking Lots Become a Reality
Downtown Puerto Vallarta will finally get a break from vehicular traffic with the construction of two parking lots, one under Parque Hidalgo and the other by Parque Benito Juarez. The lots will have a combined capacity of 438 vehicles. The Parque Hidalgo lot will be underground, maintaining and even enhancing its visual beauty. Located at the north end of the new Cuale pedestrian bridge, Parque Benito Juarez will disappear entirely, making way for a four-level parking lot. This project will include the enhancement of the neglected Malecon stretch from Los Arcos to the Cuale pedestrian bridge. No completion date has been announced, but the formal proposals from involved construction firms are expected this month.
Thursday Cultural Concert Lives
Many Vallartenses frowned when the former Camino Real hotel changed ownership and discontinued the traditional First-Thursday cultural concerts. Mayan Palace Puerto Vallarta has stepped up to the task, however. In a recent alliance announced between the hotel and Vallarta's Department of Culture, Mayan Palace Puerto Vallarta will now host the monthly free concerts, which are traditionally repeated the following day at Los Arcos.
Underground Wiring to Improve South Side
City Hall is partnering with the Emiliano Zapata Neighborhood Association to initiate an underground cabling project, visually improving the neighborhood. A monumental task, the project involves coordinating efforts among the telephone and electricity companies, along with two separate cable TV and Internet providers. The initial project, covering the stretch from the Rio Cuale to Pilitas St. near Los Muertos Beach, will cost $9 million pesos and will benefit over 500 residents. Completion is expected to take 129 days.

President Fox Visits Vallarta for New Hospital Inauguration
In a brief visit to Puerto Vallarta, Mexican President Vicente Fox Quesada, along with Jalisco Governor Francisco Ramirez Acuna, inaugurated the new Regional Hospital, a project with a $59 million pesos investment. As the celebration took place, President Fox congratulated the staff, which successfully handled the first birth at the new facilities.

Puerto Vallarta's New Official Website Launched
After two months of development, the new official Puerto Vallarta website has been launched at www.visitpuertovallarta.com. A joint project between Puerto Vallarta's Tourism Bureau and Producciones Viva, the new website contains up-do-date information, photo galleries and maps for visitors interested in traveling to our destination. VisitPuertoVallarta.com also takes advantage of Producciones Viva's years of publishing expertise, offering rotating articles from "Vallarta Lifestyles" and its other fine publications. Presently only in English, VisitPuertoVallarta.com will be fully bilingual in the near future.

Coming About Offers Children's Sailing Programs
Coming About, Puerto Vallarta's sailing school for women, began offering summer sailing courses for children. Using Optimists-international class racing dinghies chosen throughout Mexico and the world as the best introductory boat for learning to sail-children ages 9 to 14 can have the pleasure of single handing these boats within their first lesson, giving them a sense of freedom and responsibility. The Mexican Sailing Federation provided the boats for this program, hoping to see a competitive team emerge in Puerto Vallarta from the youngsters enrolled, as there are active fleets in Valle de Bravo and other areas of Mexico promoting a high level of accomplishment among young sailors. Learn more about this program by visiting Coming About's website at www.comingabout.com.
